The US Army War College and Recruiting Command held a Veterans Day ceremony today honoring those who have served, are currently serving and plan to serve in the future.
The ceremony began at 11 a.m. at the US Army Heritage and Education Center in Carlisle. It featured music by the Carlisle Brass Band and a speech by Major General David Hill, commander of the US Army War College.
Hill spoke about the value veterans bring to their respective communities.
“Veterans contribute their skills and leadership to their communities,” Hill said. “They are teachers who are educating our next generation of citizens and inspiring the next generation to help serve our country’s democracy.”
Hill’s speech was followed by the oath of enlistment, in which recruits are officially recognized as new soldiers. Veterans greeted the arriving soldiers and family members took photos and celebrated their loved one’s achievements.
Karl Warner, Army veteran and department head for education and information at the center, provided some general advice as these new soldiers were welcomed.
Warner served as a gunner in the 1st Calvary Division from 2000 to 2006.
“I served in Iraqi Freedom 2 in Baghdad,” Warner said. “I was shot enough times and decided not to re-enlist. I used my GI Bill benefits to get a degree, and I’ve been working here since 2010.”
Warner advised the recruits to put all their effort into their service to make the most of their time.
“You get out of the military what you put into it,” Warner said. “Military service is important. The military is great. If you put your heart and soul into it, you will have a great career.”
AHEC volunteer and Vietnam War veteran Joe Boslet is a 1968 Penn State alumnus who received his official draft notice after graduation. Boslet served in military intelligence after completing basic training in Georgia and learning Vietnamese for 47 weeks.
In October 1970, he was sent to Vietnam to work as an intelligence coordinator, advisor and linguist. He earned two Bronze Stars and a Gallantry Medal during his three years of service and advised young people to consider all aspects of military service.
“You learn so much by working together, helping others succeed, and not being so selfish,” Boslet said. “The training is second to none and women can do things very well and sometimes even better than most men.”
Newly enlisted Army soldier and recent Fairfield High School graduate Molly Nightingale, 18, was excited about fulfilling her dream of becoming a helicopter pilot. When she was six years old, she saw a military helicopter flying overhead and became fascinated by the idea.
“Military helicopters are much cooler than fixed-wing aircraft because you use every part of your body to fly them,” Nightingale said. “The complexity is cool.”
She plans to complete basic training in the coming years, followed by flight and non-commissioned officer school.
“I started this process over a year ago and I’m happy to be able to follow my dreams,” says Nightingale.
Nikolas Lego, 23, attended Messiah University before deciding to no longer put off his desire to serve.
“It feels great to take the oath of enlistment on Veterans Day in front of veterans and commanders,” he said. “All the milestones for each point in this process now feel more realistic.”
Lego goes to Fort Jackson for basic training and then to Fort Moore in Georgia for officer training.
